If you've ever called a paving contractor for a quote, you've probably had this moment: you ask about "asphalt," they mention "bitumen," your neighbour calls it "tarmac," and somehow you're all talking about the same driveway. So which word is correct?
Here's the short version — and then the full breakdown, because once you understand it, every future quote conversation gets a lot easier.
Bitumen is an ingredient. Asphalt is the finished product. Tarmac is an older, mostly British/Australian term that's often used loosely to mean the same thing as asphalt. Bitumen is the sticky, black binder; asphalt is bitumen mixed with stone and sand to create the durable surface you actually drive and walk on. Tarmac technically refers to a specific (and now largely outdated) construction method, but in everyday conversation it's usually just another word for asphalt.
Bitumen is a thick, black, petroleum-based substance — essentially the heavy, sticky residue left over after crude oil is refined. On its own, it's not something you'd pave a driveway with. It's too soft and gooey to handle traffic by itself.
Think of bitumen as the glue. It's the binding agent that holds everything else together. Without it, asphalt would just be a pile of loose gravel and sand.
Bitumen also shows up in other forms — as a sealant, a waterproofing membrane, and an ingredient in some roofing products — but for driveways and roads, its main job is to act as the binder in asphalt mix.
Asphalt is what you get when you combine bitumen with aggregate — a mix of crushed stone, sand, and gravel — and heat it all together. The result is "hot mix asphalt," which is exactly what it sounds like: aggregate and bitumen mixed at high temperature, then laid and compacted while it's still hot.
Roughly speaking, asphalt is about 90–95% aggregate and 5–10% bitumen by weight. The bitumen coats every stone in the mix and binds it into a solid, flexible surface once it cools. That flexibility is actually one of asphalt's biggest advantages — it can handle ground movement and temperature swings far better than rigid surfaces like concrete.
So when someone says "we're laying asphalt," they mean bitumen plus aggregate, properly mixed and compacted. Bitumen never appears on its own as a finished driveway or road surface — it's always asphalt by the time it's down on the ground.
"Tarmac" is short for tarmacadam, a road-building method developed in the early 1900s. It involved spraying tar over a layer of crushed stone (the "macadam" surface, named after engineer John Loudon McAdam) and then rolling it flat. That tar-and-stone method was the dominant road-paving technique for decades — and the name stuck.
Modern paving doesn't actually use tar anymore. It uses bitumen, which is a different substance derived from crude oil rather than coal. So technically, true "tarmac" in the original sense isn't what's being laid today.
That said, the word never went away. In Australia, the UK, and plenty of other countries, "tarmac" is still used informally to mean the same thing as asphalt — most people aren't drawing a technical distinction, they're just using the word they grew up with. You'll also hear it used for things like airport runways and aprons, where the term has stuck around in industry language even longer.
None of this is anyone's fault. The confusion happens for a few simple reasons:
Bitumen is the raw ingredient, asphalt is the finished mix, and tarmac is an old method that's become a generic nickname for the result.
Older Australians and Brits tend to say "tarmac," while younger generations and most of the industry now default to "asphalt."
Even within the industry, "bitumen" sometimes gets used as shorthand for asphalt, especially in casual conversation, because bitumen is the part people associate with the smell and the black colour.
In short — the terminology drifted over a century of changing methods, and everyday language never caught up with the technical distinction.
For the most part, no — if you tell a contractor you want "tarmac" or "bitumen" for your driveway, they'll know exactly what you mean. What actually matters for your quote isn't which word you use, it's:
The ratio and grade of bitumen used, and the size/type of aggregate, which affects strength and lifespan
A driveway, a road, and a basketball court all need different mix specs and thicknesses
How the ground underneath is prepared has a bigger impact on longevity than what you call the surface
A good contractor will ask about how the area is used (cars only, or heavier vehicles? high traffic or occasional use?) rather than getting hung up on which word you used to describe it. If anything, asking "what mix are you using and why?" gets you a more useful answer than worrying about asphalt-vs-bitumen-vs-tarmac terminology.
You don't "choose" between bitumen, asphalt, and tarmac the way you'd choose between two different materials — asphalt is the product, and bitumen is always part of it. What actually changes from job to job is the mix and application method. Here's how that plays out across common projects:
